Sustainability Yearbook 2019 includes METRO AG with Gold status

Since 2004, the "Sustainability Yearbook" has been presenting companies with outstanding sustainability performance from RobecoSAM's annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). For the fourth year in a row, METRO AG has been awarded with the highest grade "Gold Class" and thus is included in the Sustainability Yearbook 2019.

In 2018, 2,686 companies from 60 industries were assessed in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). For this purpose, 166,222 documents were uploaded and more than 2.4 million data points were collected and evaluated. The wholesale and food specialist METRO emerged from this assessment 2018 for the fourth year in a row as industry leader in the group "Food and Staples Retailing" and heads in this category the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices Europe and World.

This makes METRO one of the world's most sustainable companies. METRO scored particularly well in the areas Talent Attraction & Retention, Environmental and Social Reporting, Human Rights and Water Risks in the Supply Chain.

As part of the assessment in 2018, METRO AG also made a voluntary contribution to the "Future Questions" category. Information provided by companies in this part was not included in the general assessment but supports RobecoSAM in the continuous development of the methods on which the assessment is based. In particular, the "Future Questions" category involves the impact assessment of entrepreneurial actions on society and the environment, which has an increasing importance.

For this purpose, METRO presented its "Sustainable Value Creation Model". This methodology was applied retroactively for the first time in 2018 for the 2016/2017 financial year. It compares METRO AG's consumption of resources with the value that the wholesale company creates along the entire value chain. The model makes it possible to directly compare the significance of the economic, ecological and social impacts and to demonstrate interactions. The results of the sustainability balance show where negative effects can be mitigated and positive effects intensified. For this innovative approach, RobecoSAM has named METRO as "Leading Practical Example in the Food Sector".

RobecoSAM, one of the leading rating agencies in the field of sustainability, and Dow Jones Indexes jointly launched the Sustainability Index in 1999. The underlying Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) has thus been a leading methodology for assessing the ESG performance of companies for 20 years. The results are published in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and the Sustainability Yearbook. The latter is published with the publication of the current issue under the brand name "SAM". SAM is the RobecSAM unit for the provision of ESG data, ratings and benchmarking.
