The warehouse, opened in March 2019 as METRO Wholesale Myanmar kicked off its operations in the country, has incorporated cost-effective green building features, including energy-efficient air conditioning, insulation, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and environmentally-friendly building materials into its design.

The building is projected to achieve 34 percent savings in energy, 37 percent savings in water, and 66 percent savings in the energy that is used to produce the materials. In addition to reducing utility costs, EDGE certification enables METRO Myanmar to take a leading position in promoting green standards in the market.

"METRO is committed to raising the bar in the food distribution industry in Myanmar. Therefore, we ensure that the highest standards are set in our state-of-the-art facility in Thilawa that is now EDGE certified. The EDGE certification is a result of our commitment towards achieving our sustainability goals whilst our green design and building construction allows us to save significantly on utilities now and in the future,” said Jens Michel, CEO of METRO Wholesale Myanmar.

METRO Wholesale Myanmar inaugurated its operations in March 2019, offering food service distribution from the certified warehouse for hotels, restaurants, catering firms, independent small retailers and offices across the country.

An innovation of IFC, EDGE is an online platform, a green building standard, and a certification system for more than 170 countries. It helps property developers to build and brand green in a fast, easy, and affordable way. EDGE is supported by free software that encourages solutions to reduce energy, water, and the energy used to make building materials by at least 20 percent, which is the standard for EDGE certification.
