Eric Riegger appointed new CEO of METRO AG

Effective 1 October 2026, Eric Riegger, currently Chief Financial Officer of METRO AG, will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The Supervisory Board of METRO AG has determined the company’s future leadership structure following the departure of Chief Executive Officer Dr Steffen Greubel on 30 September 2026. Effective 1 October 2026, Eric Riegger, currently Chief Financial Officer of METRO AG, will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He will take on this role in addition to his existing responsibilities as Chief Financial Officer.

Eric Riegger is not only a proven finance expert but also brings extensive operational retail and wholesale experience gained over many years. Together with his Management Board colleagues and under the leadership of our outgoing CEO Dr Steffen Greubel, Eric Riegger has played a key role in returning METRO to a sustainable growth trajectory. At the same time, he has demonstrated exceptional expertise in the areas of cost efficiency and profitability. As Chief Financial Officer and member of METRO’s Management Board, Eric Riegger has played a key role in driving the company’s sCore strategy, combining financial leadership and transformation management. In addition to his finance responsibilities, Eric has advanced METRO’s digital transformation by promoting business-IT alignment, harmonization of systems and processes, multi-channel capabilities, and a valuedriven AI strategy. Eric has been a strong advocate for linking technology, innovation, and financial performance to sustainable value creation and profitable growth.

Eric Riegger has been a member of the Management Board of METRO AG since February 2024. His existing appointment is due to run until 31 December 2030.

Eric Riegger has more than 20 years of international retail and wholesale experience. Prior to joining METRO AG, Eric Riegger had worked in the US since 2015. He served as a Managing Director of ALDI USA re-sponsible for Finance and HR from 2019. Before that, he was a member of Lidl US's Executive Management team, where he played a key role as Chief Financial Officer and with additional responsibility for HR in the company's expansion into the North American market. He joined Lidl in 2002 and held a variety of leadership positions in Germany and internationally, including in Ireland and at Lidl International's headquarters.

Over the coming weeks, Eric Riegger, together with his Management Board colleagues Christiane Giesen, Chief Operating Officer and Labour Director, and Guillaume Deruyter, Chief Customer and Merchandise Officer, will initiate a process to further develop the sCore strategy. The objective is to ensure METRO’s sustainable growth. In conjunction with his continued responsibility for Finance and IT, Eric Riegger will place particular emphasis on strengthening profitability, improving cost efficiency and leveraging digital solutions to further enhance the company's operational performance.
