MAKRO Spain boosts Food Service Distribution capability in northern Spain
24 March 2026
Opening of the Food Service Distribution (FSD) depot in Galdakao (Bizkaia)
In early March MAKRO Spain opened its new Food Service Distribution (FSD) depot in Galdakao (Bizkaia), its first platform in northern Spain that aims to enhance more efficient foodservice for hospitality customers across the Basque Country, Asturias, Cantabria, and Navarre.
The new multi-temperature logistics facility, operating 18 loading bays over a space of 13,000 m2, enables a daily processing capacity of 2,000 orders out of up to 40,000 SKUs. It offers a storage space of over 7,500 pallets for dry food, chilled, frozen, and fresh fruit and vegetables, including 3,400 carefully selected product lines to address the most in-demand items for the hospitality businesses.
The FSD orders for customers in Euskadi, Asturias, Cantabria, and Navarra have been in the past prepared at MAKRO’s national platforms and its wholesale stores in these regions, from where the last-mile delivery was carried out. Thanks to this regional platform, MAKRO is further optimising its foodservice supply chains, fulfilling 93% of orders for these regions directly from this new facility and thus allowing the wholesale stores to dedicate more time and resources to advising the in-store customers. In addition, it is exploring new delivery routes to ensure more hospitality customers can benefit from the company’s foodservice competence.
The Galdakao depot inauguration marked a significant milestone in MAKRO Spain’s nationwide logistics network transformation launched in 2022 with the aim of building up its foodservice distribution. Currently, 35% of the wholesaler’s sales in the Basque Country, Asturias, Cantabria, and Navarre are generated through FSD. With this platform, MAKRO aims to double the FSD sales in these autonomous communities over the coming years.
