The year 2021 marks the semicentennial for METRO Austria: on March 2nd, 1971, the first METRO wholesale market outside Germany was opened in Vienna.
With the launch of 36,000 articles in assortment and longest opening hours in the country, METRO revolutionised the Austrian wholesale landscape. In particularly, the exclusive membership enabled METRO to offer its customers a unique shopping experience.
Today, METRO operates 12 wholesale stores in Austria with a total sales area of around 140,000 m2, employs around 2,100 full-time staff and offers a range of around 48,000 food and non-food articles, including more than 2,000 regional products. Internationality and regionality go hand in hand.
