New logistics platform drives FSD growth of MAKRO Spain
14 June 2023MAKRO Spain on June 12 celebrated the successful first anniversary of the operations of its El Prat de Llobregat logistics platform, launched in May 2022 in the Barcelona area. The depot, which has a floor area of 14,000 square metres, 30 loading docks and a storage capacity of 7,000 pallets, serves customers and other MAKRO stores throughout Catalonia and neighbouring regions. Thanks to its multi-temperature spaces, dry goods, chilled and frozen foods as well as a wide range of fruit and vegetable assortments can be stored here.
Around 3,000 orders are processed at the platform every day, which account for 80% of the total order volume across the region of service. Food Service Distribution (FSD) is fulfilled within 24 hours for customers. In the first quarter of 2023, the order volume increased by 18% compared to the last quarter of 2022. In addition, the number of units delivered increased by 20%. The depot is thus making a decisive contribution to strengthening the service offering for customers, especially from the hotel and catering industry.
The expansion of the FSD business in Spain supports the group-wide sCore strategy, with which METRO has set itself the goal of strongly expanding FSD as the largest growth lever within its multichannel business model.
Alessandro Urbani, Senior Vice President FSD at METRO AG, explains: "Our goal is to triple delivery sales by 2030. This makes FSD a key driver for the growth ambitions within the sCore strategy – and Spain is a very successful example in the implementation of this strategy. For example, MAKRO Spain recorded FSD growth of almost 90% in the last financial year and FSD accounted for 24% of its annual sales at the close of the 2021/22 financial year."
MAKRO Spain currently operates three delivery platforms with a total logistics capacity of 93,000 square metres, located in Quer (Gualadajara), Getafe (Madrid) and El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona). The aim is to provide a high level of FSD service to commercial customers throughout Spain.
