The Supervisory Board of METRO AG has appointed Eric Riegger as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of METRO AG with effect from 1 October 2026. Eric Riegger, currently Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the company, will succeed Dr Steffen Greubel, who asked the Supervisory Board to terminate his contract at the end of the current financial year. Eric Riegger will assume the role of CEO in addition to his current responsibilities. With this appointment, METRO ensures continuity and sets the course for further advancing its sCore growth strategy.

Roman Šilha, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of METRO AG, explains the decision: “The Supervisory Board appoints Eric Riegger as Chief Executive Officer of METRO AG with its full confidence. Eric Riegger is not only a proven finance expert but also brings extensive operational retail and wholesale experience gained over many years. Together with his Management Board colleagues and under the leadership of our outgoing CEO Dr Steffen Greubel, Eric Riegger has played a key role in returning METRO to a sustainable growth trajectory. At the same time, he has demonstrated exceptional expertise in the areas of cost efficiency and profitability. On behalf of the Supervisory Board, I would like to thank Eric for taking on this responsibility and wish him every success in his new role.”

Roman Šilha adds: “Steffen Greubel has fundamentally reshaped METRO. He created a corporate culture in which customer focus, sales drive, speed and entrepreneurial thinking have once again become second nature. The Supervisory Board greatly regrets his decision and sincerely thanks him for his outstanding achievements and the trust-based cooperation throughout his tenure.”

Eric Riegger says: “With sCore, METRO has built a strong strategic foundation. The focus now is to shape METRO's next phase of development. I would like to thank the Supervisory Board of METRO AG for its trust. I am very much looking forward to working together with my fellow Management Board members and our teams to further evolve the sCore strategy, unlock further growth opportunities and sharpen our focus on the needs of our customers and the opportunities within our markets. At the same time, we will continue to strengthen METRO's financial foundation, further streamline our processes and thus foster sustainable, profitable growth.”

Dr Steffen Greubel states: “Leading METRO has been a privilege. Together with an outstanding team, we have transformed METRO into a growing wholesale company that is closer to its customers than ever before. After five years of successful transformation, METRO is entering a new phase. There are differing views regarding the company's direction. I am convinced that this next chapter should be shaped by new leadership that can take full ownership from the outset. This is why I asked the Supervisory Board to terminate my contract. I would like to thank my colleagues and our hospitality customers for their trust and partnership. I wish METRO, my successor Eric Riegger, and everyone connected with the company all the very best for the future.”

Eric Riegger has been a member of the Management Board of METRO AG since February 2024. His existing appointment is due to run until 31 December 2030.

Over the coming weeks, Eric Riegger, together with his Management Board colleagues Christiane Giesen, Chief Operating Officer and Labour Director, and Guillaume Deruyter, Chief Customer and Merchandise Officer, will initiate a process to further develop the sCore strategy. The objective is to ensure METRO’s sustainable growth. In conjunction with his continued responsibility for Finance and IT, Eric Riegger will place particular emphasis on strengthening profitability, improving cost efficiency and leveraging digital solutions to further enhance the company's operational performance.
