METRO Germany opens a new wholesale market in Hamburg

After around 15 months of construction, METRO Germany on November 11 celebrated its latest store in Germany in Hamburg-Rahlstedt, which is the company’s 4th location in Hamburg.

"The new METRO wholesale store in Hamburg-Rahlstedt is specifically designed to meet the needs of our customers in the catering, hotel and trader sectors. With modern facilities, focused product ranges and efficient delivery processes combined with digital services, we are making a clear contribution to the future-proof multichannel wholesale in the Hamburg metropolitan region," stressed Roland Ruffing, CEO of METRO Germany.

With a total area of around 12,500 m2, including 6,400 m2 of sales floor and 3,300 m2 for delivery, the new wholesale market offers optimised in-store routing and clear product placement in the food and non-food departments to ensure easy orientation and a modern in-store purchasing experience.

The new outlet is also logistically optimised with modern infrastructure and well-considered processes. Catering customers in the Hamburg region are set to benefit from a professional delivery service that processes orders quickly and efficiently. This means reduced lead times, robust processes and a reliable supply.

The new facility sets standards for energy-efficient and sustainable construction: the building is insulated according to modern standards, completely dispenses with fossil fuels and instead uses waste heat from its own refrigeration system for heating and cooling. In addition, the installation of a photovoltaic system with an output of around 800 kWp is planned for the first quarter of 2026. It is expected to generate around 650,000 kWh per year, covering around 50 per cent of the market's annual electricity demands.
