METRO Italy opens new multichannel fulfilment centre in Olbia
15 April 2025
METRO Italy opened a new multichannel fulfilment centre (MFC) in Olbia in northern Sardinia on 10 April 2025. With the opening of the new location, METRO is expanding its strong position in Sardinia and complementing the existing locations in Cagliari and Sassari. At the same time, the island is one of the regions with the most METRO stores in central and southern Italy after Lazio (greater Rome area) thanks to its strong tourism and high density of hotels, restaurants and catering businesses (HoReCa).
In addition to a high own-brand assortment share of 26%, a special focus is also placed on local products in Olbia. METRO works with 95 local suppliers in Sardinia, who provide over 700 products from the areas of wine, cheese, cold cuts, fruit and vegetables and fish. In addition, a delivery zone of 1,300 square metres was integrated into the newly built store, which offers space for 6 trucks.
METRO's multichannel strategy aims to align the stores even more closely with the needs of professional customers from the HoReCa sector. The core element here is the efficient combination of in-store sales areas with an extended delivery service. As a result, the stores can be used not only as sales locations, but also as efficient warehouses and delivery platforms.

The delivery business is a key lever in METRO's sCore growth strategy. In addition to the transformation of the stores into multichannel fulfilment centres, 2 fully dedicated FSD (Food Service Distribution) depots in the metropolitan Milan and Rome respectively ensure efficient deliveries to hospitality customers.
In order to offer delivery customers an even better service and to further optimise METRO Italy's distribution network, a further FSD depot with an area of 9,000 square metres will be opened in Pontedera/Tuscany in the coming weeks.
